NOGAPS DART: A comparison of EnKF-based and FNMOC operational ensemble forecasts

The Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) model has been incorporated into the NCAR Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART) framework, enabling analyses and ensemble forecasts through ensemble-based data assimilation. Initial experimentation has focused upon comparing ensemble forecasts generated using DART with ensemble forecasts generated using the Navy's operational ensemble construction methodology: the Ensemble Transform (ET). Strengths and weaknesses of the two ensemble construction methodologies will be presented.
