Some 45 years ago, Michio Yanai penned a review of the problem of tropical cyclogenesis. After the passage of nearly half a century we are still addressing many of the problems detailed in his comprehensive review of the problem. In this presentation we will review Yanai's contributions to the problem of genesis and present some new results using a cloud system-resolving model to explore the problem of spontaneous genesis and the sensitivity of genesis to environmental conditions such as potential intensity and wind shear. These and other contemporary results will be examined in the context of the view from 45 years ago.
