The Department of Defense has assumed responsibility for the early morning polar environmental satellite orbit after the restructure of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System program. The new Defense Weather Satellite System Program Office will be building the new satellites which will include a microwave capability. This presentation will discuss microwave requirements, legacy microwave instruments including the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder, and the road ahead for the DWSS next generation operational microwave imager.
