S89 The National Hydrography Dataset and its Applications

Sunday, 23 January 2011
Katelyn Welsh, California University of Pennsylvania, California, PA

The National Hydrography Dataset is utilized to plot stream data, such as where the water is coming from, where it is going and the path it takes. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and aerial photography are being used to make the data more precise. Storm water as well as groundwater is incorporated to help fill the previously missing data. In order to advance the science, participation from the Continental United States as well as Mexico and Canada are needed to formulate a more detailed and accurate hydrography database. By updating this database, applications for pollution, security and hydrography will be more accurate.
