Advancements to the Operational Hurricane Modeling System (HWRF) At NCEP/EMC
Hall E (New Orleans Convention Center )
Vijay Tallapragada, NOAA/NWS/NCEP/EMC, Camp Springs, MD

This presentation gives an overview of the advancements towards developing a triple nested high-resolution hurricane forecasting system based on the operational HWRF model. Improvements are expected in the representation of hurricane structure as a result of the higher resolution, leading toimproved skills for track and intensity forecasts. High-resolution model diagnostics will be presented with a focus on comparisons to available aircraft and remotely sensed observations. Ongoing collaborative efforts with Prof. Krishnamurti's group at FSU on advanced model diagnostics will be highlighted. Details of computational efficiency experiments that will eventually lead to operational implementation will be discussed. Ongoing developmental activities include improving the physics, initialization, ocean coupling and other model aspects to take advantage of the higher atmospheric model resolution and realize improved hurricane intensity and structure prediction.
