Warmings of the Stratospheric Polar Vortex and the Influence on Surface Climate
Room 354 (New Orleans Convention Center )
The influence of the stratosphere on changes in Northern Hemisphere winter climate during the 21st century is considered. In particular, changes in the mid-winter sudden warmings and the final warming of the stratospheric polar vortex are documented, and their influence on the North Atlantic Oscillation is investigated.
Simulations are run at the UK Met Office for CMIP5, using an extended (high top) version of the Met Office Unified Model.
