The real time multivariate MJO (RMM) indices developed by Wheeler and Hendon provide a convenient basis for assessing some of the impacts of the Madden Julian oscillation on the global circulation and on regional air temperature. The associated temperature fluctuations influence energy markets on timescales of 1 to 3 weeks. This presentation discusses the costs and benefits of traditional approaches to application of these indices to this problem, along with caveats and pointers to help the industry apply the indices more effectively.
