Exhibit Hall 3 (Austin Convention Center)
Previous work at CIMSS has shown the possibilities for identifying turbulent mountain waves in satellite water vapor imagery. This presentation extends the work on mountain waves to show the additional methods for tracking other turbulence-prone events in the atmosphere associated with gravity waves, especially gravity wave-induced transverse banding near major convective updrafts. Case studies and quantitative validation will be presented, using automated, objected, high-density observations of turbulence from Eddy Dissipation Rate (EDR) reports offered by instrumented commercial aircraft. We will also demonstrate the real-time, experimental turbulence nowcasting product currently operated at CIMSS.
