The Cross Track Infrared/Microwave Sounding Suite (CrIMSS) State 2 algorithm was developed to enable single Field of View profile retrievals, while preserving numerical processing speed. The algorithm has new logic that enhances the performance of the baseline JPSS/NPP CrIMSS algorithm through salvaging of non-convergent CrIS retrievals. In addition to improved numerical methods and matrix mathematics for efficiency, the code incorporates some of the latest advances in the generalized training of coefficients for Optimum Spectral Sampling and channel selection via information content approach. The methodology exploits channel redundancy to reduce the number of channels required in the retrieval and enables de-selection of channels sensitive to variable trace gases. This paper addresses the best features of the algorithm for assimilation into operational code. A comparison of retrieval performance is made between the baseline CrIMSS EDR retrieval algorithm and the State 2 algorithm using the Suomi NPP CrIS/ATMS Golden Day datasets.
