AWIPS II Technology Infusion is a multiphase program. The first phase is the migration of the Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) and River Forecast Centers (RFCs) AWIPS I capabilities into a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), referred to as AWIPS II. AWIPS II is currently being deployed to Operational Test and Evaluation (OTE) and other select deployment sites.

The subsequent phases of AWIPS Technology Infusion, known as AWIPS II Extended, include several projects that will improve technological capabilities of AWIPS II in order to enhance the NWS enterprise and improve services to partners.

This paper summarizes AWIPS II Extended – Thin Client project and reports on its status. The Thin Client Project provides the capability to run the visualization component of AWIPS II, called Common AWIPS Visualization Environment (CAVE) remotely from an AWIPS site that ingest and stores AWIPS II data. The Thin Client runs on Linux or Windows platforms. Thin Client intended users include Central Weather Service Units (CWSUs) and National Weather Service forecasters deployed to support incidents.

The Thin Client project also includes an AWIPS Browser Based Interface (ABBI) to access and display select AWIPS II datasets.
