Modified mesonet winds are assimilated into the University of Utah 2DVAR analysis system to evaluate the influence of local roughness at the coastal interface during Hurricane Sandy's landfall. Directionally dependent adjustment of the mesonet winds based on surface roughness as well as proximity to the land/sea mask are examined. The impact of the adjusted observations on the wind analyses is presented.
