It has proven difficult to assess the aerosol indirect radiative forcing by anthropogenic aerosols from observational data. The talk will first provide a short overview of failed attempts to infer clues about the indirect forcing from observational data. It will further present studies exploiting the CMIP5 multi-model ensemble, in which we find that the idealised simulations used to quantify the aerosol forcing are very useful to assess the forcing actually employed in the historical simulations. The historical simulations are compared to observed trends to infer a constraint on the total aerosol forcing.
