For 45 years the NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) network has broadcast life-saving bulletins direct from the National Weather Service. More than 1,000 NWR transmitters cover 98% of the US population with a free, continuous stream of weather information that is reaching the largest audience in the network's history. In the face of newer, more convenient, and more ubiquitous warning systems and devices, NWR is still strongly supported by meteorologists, emergency managers, elected officials, and a very loyal listener base…especially in Tornado Alley. Proposed changes and improvements mean NWR could evolve with new audio, video, and GPS services, thereby serving a much broader audience with a fuller suite of information. For today and tomorrow it remains a foundational communication link between the National Weather Service and our Weather-Ready Nation.
