Vegetation Health (VH) product derived from 34 yeas AVHRRR data was proved to be effective to monitor global vegetation condition (health) and drought events. The new generation of operational polar-orbiting satellites called S-NPP and JPSS with theVisible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) provide comprehensive Earth observation with bands similar to their predecessor, AVHRR sensor but with much higher resolution (375m at nadir). The obtained VIIRS data has already indicated an earlier detection of drought events, evaluation of their intensity, duration and impacts. This presentation describes the new hybrid VH product using both the high resolution data from VIIRS and long data records from AVHRR. Some results of 2014 drought in USA's California and 2012 drought in the Midwest will be demostrated.
