Aerosols impact human and environmental health as well as global climate. In this presentation I will aim to summarize the state of the science of atmospheric chemistry research related to particulate matter (PM) and the challenges ahead. The key questions in aerosol research are linked to characterizing the sources, transformations, trends, and properties of PM. I will focus on the progress made on these issues in the last 5-10 years, providing illustrations from my own work and that of the broader atmospheric chemistry community. Finally, I will discuss some of the observational and modeling challenges ahead.
