PyFerret is a Python module, as well as a stand-alone program, that provides interactive data analysis and visualization tools for oceanographers and meteorologists. For users of traditional Ferret, PyFerret can be used as a backward-compatible, “drop-in” replacement for traditional Ferret, but with improved visualization tools, more powerful data analysis, and easier generation of user-defined functions. For Python users, PyFerret permits convenient, powerful, and efficient analyses of large datasets, whether local or remote. Combining Python with Ferret multiplies the strengths of each environment, so that one can more easily access, analyze, and visualize self-describing data.
