TJ12.3 Recent Advances in Aerosol Treatments in Climate Modeling (Invited Presentation)

Tuesday, 12 January 2016: 2:00 PM
Room 357 ( New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center)
Philip Rasch, PNNL, Richland, WA

Aerosols play an important and varied role in the climate system, modifying the planet's energy budget directly (and indirectly through effects on clouds), acting as sites for photochemistry, and by serving as nutrients and pollutants affecting ecosystems and society. Unfortunately, increases in understanding of aerosols and their interactions with the climate system have not yet produced a reduction in uncertainty about their role in climate change.

In this talk I will discuss some of challenges in modeling aerosols in current climate models, describe recent advances in their treatment, and highlight some remaining challenges for next generation of Earth System Models
