The Climate Corporation (“Climate”) aims to help farmers around the world protect and improve their farming operations with uniquely powerful software and hardware products. Climate is conducting three field experiments at several locations throughout the Midwest involving a variety of meteorological instruments to investigate, document, and collect data to determine: (1) intra-field variability of precipitation and wind; (2) differences between commonly-used and research-grade weather stations; and (3) sources of uncertainty in radar-based precipitation estimates. These experiments will provide the needed data to validate, refine, and improve precipitation estimates and weather variable predictions, which are used in products such as Climate's Nitrogen Advisor. This presentation will provide an overview of the experiments completed for the 2015 growing season, including data analysis and case studies of interesting weather events observed by the equipment; and describe plans for the 2016 growing season and beyond.
