The Importance of Education and Outreach: The GOES-R Perspective

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R) series of satellites is the next generation of geostationary Earth-observing systems and will provide significant improvements in the detection and observation of environmental phenomena that directly affect public safety, protection of property, and our nation's economic health. To prepare for the new data from these satellites, the GOES-R Series Program is engaging K-12 students through a variety of methods, to include student resources, teacher resources, and outreach to the forecasting and warning community through user readiness training. Examples of resources include classroom activities, interactive learning modules, games, lesson plans, and other education materials to engage students about weather, satellite meteorology and earth science. Several training and outreach activities are ongoing to prepare the operational and educational communities by bridging the gap between research and operations. GOES-R training is developed and provided by a number of partners across the weather enterprise through the GOES-R Proving Ground, e-learning training modules, seminars, weather event simulations, and special case studies. This presentation will highlight the goals, achievements, and plans to outline the education and outreach activity underway while also enabling user readiness for the launch of the GOES-R satellite in 2016.
