Transitioning a research capability into an operational system (crossing the “Valley of Death”) is one of the more challenging aspects of providing space weather support, and several important lessons can learned from past efforts to transition space weather models into an operational capability at an operational space weather center. Based on my experience with technology transition, I will discuss the different types of approaches to R2O, the positives and negatives of the different approaches, and examples of how these have been done and what the community can learn from them.
