The Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is the imaging spectroradiometer for the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS). A successful Flight Unit 1 has been operating onboard the Suomi NPP spacecraft since 2011. VIIRS extends and improves upon the measurement legacy of AVHRR, MODIS, SeaWiFS and OLS by incorporating a number of innovations including a patented spatial sampling approach that provides a more constant pixel size across the full swath, a high dynamic range, multi gain Day Night Band (DNB) with much better sensitivity and spatial resolution than previous systems and instrument calibration approaches pioneered on MODIS.
