The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of an experimental satellite observation, the geostationary hyperspectral infrared sounders (Geo-Hyper IR) under an all operational observation scenario, and a data gap scenario with no early-afternoon orbiting satellites. IASI is used to represent the Geo-Hyper IR sounders. These sounders were simulated from the GEOS-5 Nature Run (G5NR), on five geostationary satellites with the center longitudes of 0°, 60°, 140°, 225°, and 285° at the Equator. They are then assimilated into a hybrid 3D Ensemble-Var data assimilation system, i.e. GDAS, through the Community Global OSSE Package (CGOP), with the resolution of T670/T254.
