Robert Houze, Jr., played a central role in the development of understanding of the structure and dynamics of mid-latitude squall lines including associated mesoscale circulations; precipitation structure and related microphysics; and contributions to momentum, water, and heat budgets. This talk will present a review of Houze’s contributions to the current understanding of mid-latitude squall line structure and evolution and also highlight recent results from the research community that have built upon those earlier contributions to advance our understanding of these important convective systems.
