1427 Forecast Sensitivity And Observation Impact (FSOI) Inter-Comparison Experiment – Additional Results And Interpretations

Wednesday, 25 January 2017
4E (Washington State Convention Center )
Rolf Langland, NRL, Monterey, CA

This talk will expand upon basic results obtained from a recent inter-comparison of FSOI results from several operational and forecast centers, including the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), NASA/GMAO, the UK Met Office (UKMO), the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).  In particular, differences in FSOI obtained from adjoint versus ensemble data assimilation systems (DAS) are investigated, to demonstrate how choice of DAS may affect the proportions of information extracted from satellite and in-situ atmospheric observing systems.

Note: this talk is the second of two talks on FSOI to be presented at the Jan 2017 AMS annual meeting, in the JCSDA session, with the first talk presented by Ron Gelaro (NASA-GMAO).
