Structures of spiral rainbands and their propagation mechanisms have been the focus of many previous observational, theoretical, and modeling studies. However, not many studies have examined how spiral rainbands are triggered and organized in the first place. This study addresses this question by examining the formation mechanisms of principal rainbands that are typically observed in well-developed tropical cyclones with a series of numerical simulations that use realistic and idealized conditions. Previously proposed hypotheses will be evaluated as well.
