The purpose of this research is to assess the added value of CubeSat Infrared Atmospheric Soundes (CIRAS) under two scenarios. One is on top of all current operational observation, the other one is in case of no early-afternoon orbiting satellites, or data gap. The CIRAS measures the infrared region of the spectrum. It can be used to retrieve temperature and water vapor in the lower troposphere. Through the Community Global OSSE Package (CGOP), CIRAS is simulated from the GEOS-5 Nature Run (G5NR). It will then be assimilated into a hybrid 3D Ensemble-Var data assimilation system, i.e. GDAS.
