Captain A. J. Reiss hails from the Midwest town of Akron, Ohio and eagerly joined the Navy in 1986, not wanting to ‘sit-out’ on the Cold War. Boosted by a nomination letter from then Ohio Senator John Glenn, he attended the United States Naval Academy and graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography. His next move was a good one when he got engaged to the lovely Ms. Dana Brick of Oakton, VA and from there, joined the Surface Navy and served in a rewarding tour onboard the forward-deployed and Japan based, USS McClusky (FFG 41,) as a Surface Warfare Officer. In 1994, he became a Naval Oceanographer and has since served in many numerous and rewarding assignments. Previous afloat assignments include: - 1990 to 1994: USS McClusky (FFG-41) home ported in Yokosuka, Japan and sailing in support of Operations Desert Storm, Desert Shield and numerous bi-lateral and coalition engagement exercises. On McClusky, was recognized by Commander, United States Pacific Fleet as the Junior Officer "Ship Handler of the Year.” - 2002-2004: USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) home ported in Bremerton, WA serving as Strike Group Oceanographer for Commander, Carrier Group Three and sailing in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Previous shore duty assignments include: - 1994-1997: Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Center in Pearl Harbor, HI as a Forecaster, Command Duty Officer, Ship Router, and Typhoon forecaster - 1997-1999: Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA earning a Master of Science degree in Air and Ocean Sciences. - 2004-2005: Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Facility, Whidbey Island, WA as the Executive Officer - 2005-2008: Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, Monterey, CA as Operations Officer and Executive Officer - 2008-2010: Naval Maritime Forecast Center in Norfolk, VA as Commanding Officer - 2010-2012: Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, Stennis Space Center, MS as Director of Navy Weather Services - 2012-2015: Naval Oceanographic Office, Stennis Space Center, MS as Executive then Commanding Officer - 2015-Present: Executive Assistant to the Oceanographer and Navigator of the Navy who is responsible resource, requirements and policy advice for the U.S. Navy for Oceanography, Meteorology, Precise Navigation and Timing, Task Force Climate Change, and Maritime Domain Awareness CAPT Reiss has earned personal, unit and campaign awards, but his greatest reward is sharing life and the grand navy adventure together with his wife Dana. Over two a half decades, 13 assignments, and nine household moves, together they have been blessed
