Session Are We There Yet? Measuring the Atmosphere from Space, Then and Now

Thursday, 28 March 2019: 10:20 AM-11:00 AM
Auditorium (AAAS Building)
Host: 2019 AMS Washington Forum
Moderator:
Jamison Hawkins, Lockheed Martin, Civil Space & Environmental Programs, Greenbelt, MD

Capabilities of space-based observing systems for weather have increased to a level that was impossible to predict 60 years ago when the first weather satellite was launched. These technology advances enabled the development of applications that are now the backbone of forecasting. Industry R&D has enabled advances in sensors and spacecraft through the years, but investments for future systems will not be driven exclusively by higher performance requirements. A panel discussion will address how emerging technologies may influence design choices for future operational systems.
