The sea & sky connection

Ann T. Kelly, Our Lady of Sorrows School, St. Louis, MO

Fifth grade students at Our Lady of Sorrows School in St. Louis, Missouri have turned into amateur meteorologists and scientists. Thanks to DASH (Developmental Approaches in Science and Health), NASA's CERES S'COOL Project, and the AMS Education Programs of Datastreme Atmosphere,Water in the Earth System, and Datastreme Ocean, these fifth graders are excited about what's happening in their Science classes.

Children have a natural curiosity of the world around them. They are filled with many questions about how and why things are as they are. Because of this, weather is a perfect topic of study. It enables the child to turn many questions into reality. The child has become the scientist. Even though these students are land-locked, they still possess a deep interest in studying the ocean, and perhaps being land-locked even works to the child's advantage as the secrets and mysteries of the ocean are discovered and explored by many for the very first time.

These students have mixed Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, and Science together. They have questioned, created, explored, and discovered new things. They have crossed over to the wonderful world of science, a place where inquisitive minds have been hard at work, and they have loved it.
