Understanding Weather Helps in Storm Chasing–Storm Chasing Helps Understand Weather: A Win-Win Situation

Joshua J. Jans, Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN; and C. S. Keen

Textbooks, lectures, slides and videos have been the tools instructors have traditionally used in weather courses in the past. While adequate when combined with passion and good teaching, they lack the dynamism of an actual experience. Taking cutting edge technology into the field allows simultaneous comparison of computer generated graphics with reality, thus providing another depth of understanding of both phenomena. The delay between data downloads and nature’s in-situ evolutions, provides the storm chaser with a far deeper understanding of the shortfalls of numerical interpretations and predictions. This paper highlights some of these experiences over the past summer season in the mid-west plains.
