Tree Ring Records Underestimate Volcanic Cooling

Volcanic stratospheric aerosols layers produce enhanced downward diffuse shortwave radiation and reduced direct shortwave radiation. Some trees respond to this by producing enhanced growth. This enhanced growth following volcanic eruptions may serve to counteract the reduced growth that would have been caused by cooler temperatures. This means that climate reconstructions of the cooling effects of volcanic eruptions may have underestimated the cooling if this radiation effect was not considered.
