Impacts of Cloud Seeding on COOP Precipitation Measurements in the Southern Plains

Recent research focused on data from the Cooperative Observation (COOP) network to determine the impacts of cloud seeding on precipitation amounts. Over 30 years of COOP observations of precipitation in Oklahoma and Texas were analyzed to determine if cloud seeding from aircraft generated larger precipitation amounts than normal. Categorized precipitation amounts were calculated on a county level basis to allow a better spatial analysis of the data. The majority of the cloud seeding projects were operational from the early 1990’s through the present and covered a large area of western Oklahoma and western Texas. A better understanding of precipitation impacts from cloud seeding will allow the benefits and/or limitations of cloud seeding to be known.
