Space environment data from NOAA satellites and its importance to decision makers

Howard J Singer, NOAA, Boulder, CO

Our Nation’s reliance on the GOES and POES space environment measurements continues to grow in importance to support a diverse user community. Instruments on GOES and POES monitor conditions on the sun and solar effects on the near-Earth space environment, which includes the magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere and upper atmosphere. Data from these NOAA satellites give an indication of conditions in space, they are used to drive and validate numerical models, and they provide a measure of long-term environmental trends. This presentation will provide an overview of: the status and future for the GOES and POES instruments; the space weather products derived from the data; and how these data and products benefit the Space Environment Center’s customers which are adversely impacted by space weather. .
