In 2001, we started a 26-year (1979-2004) reanalysis under a collaboration project of Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI). This year is the last year of this project. In JRA-25, many types of satellite wind data were used, some are estimated by identifying and localizing the pattern (“tracer”) in successive geostationary satellites images, which are provided as Atmospheric Motion Vector (AMV) or Cloud Motion Wind (CMW). It is of interest to study how satellite wind data performed together with all other types of data in assimilation systems. The investigation of the impacts of AMV and CMW were already made with regards to ERA-15, JMA assimilation system and so on. In this time, we tried to confirm the impacts of AMV and CMW data on JRA-25, considering the influence of upper and lower level wind respectively. The impacts on specific physical elements and the efficiencies of them in each region and each satellite will be presented. In addition, we will provide the characteristics of AMV newly derived from GMS series which features the JRA-25 Reanalysis.
