Online weather studies at Gavilan College
Exhibit Hall A2 (Georgia World Congress Center)
Andrew H. Van Tuyl, Gavilan College, Gilroy, CA

With its large Hispanic student population, Gavilan College, located in Gilroy, CA, has become a member of the AMS Diversity Project. As part of the project, an introductory meteorology course, Physical Science 2, will be offered during Fall Semester 2005. The course is presented online, although two textbooks, the AMS Online Weather Studies text and a corresponding book of lab exercises, are also employed. The students are assigned two lab exercises per week, which they complete using daily meteorological data from the AMS Online Weather Studies website. A daily online weather briefing from the University of Wisconsin is also made available to stimulate interest. This poster will present background information about Gavilan College and describe the implementation and overall progress of the course in more detail.
