Improving the GCOS Surface and Upper Air Networks
A411 (Georgia World Congress Center)
Richard K. Thigpen, GCOS Secretariat, Silver Spring, MD; and H. Diamond

Through collaborative efforts of the GCOS Secretariat and the US GCOS Program Office, a variety of improvements of the two GCOS atmospheric observing networks have been implemented. These improvements range from renovation of existing stations, to activating new stations in data sparse areas, out reach activities to obtain critical historical data, and regional technical support projects which provide site inspections and equipment maintenance. Substantial progress has been made but a great deal more is needed. This paper will provide an up date on activities as well as a view towards future activities.
