5.1 Scale dependent features of turbulent eddies within and above a forest canopy derived from wavelet transform analysis

This paper reports on a multi-scale parameterization of Reynolds stress budget and the relative contribution of the different terms in the budget with respect to scale within and above a forest canopy. We make use of the time-frequency localization property of wavelet transform technique to examine the features of the turbulent signal locally and at different scales. This technique is used in the present study to extract the scale dependence characteristics of turbulent eddies. The turbulence measurements carried out in an open slash pine forest as a part of AMERIFLUX (Florida site) program are used in the analysis. The variation of scale dependent features with respect to height is investigated using the sonic anemometer measurements at 5 levels (4 levels within the canopy and one level above) on a 15 m tower. The influence of atmospheric stability on intermittency and length scales of the eddies are also investigated.
