Comparison among first, second and third order CBL models

Matteo Zampieri, Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of the Italian National Research Council, Bologna, Italy

Canuto (1994), among others, showed that second order turbulence closure models produce results in good agreement with LES data, so they are satisfactory for application in operational weather forecasting. On the other hand they are computationally too expensive to be implemented in operational models. Therefore lower order models are usually preferred. We compare the results obtained from the implementation of the complete second order model suggested by Canuto with the results obtained from lower order closures, namely E-ε and E-l models. The aim is to understand the limitations of this latter models and to find a suitable parameterization for the mixing length and for the dissipation equation.
