Multiplicity of ENSO

Fei-Fei Jin, Florida State Univ., Tallahassee, FL; and L. Bejarano

El Niņo and La Niņa are currently understood as warm and cold phases of a natural mode of oscillation that arises as the result of the ocean and the atmosphere interaction over the tropical Pacific. A new picture for the El Niņo phenomenon emerged from this study: the great variations and the broad spectrum of the El Niņo and La Niņa cycles in modern time result from the coexistence of at least two leading modes with periods of nearly 4-6 and 2-3 years. This multiplicity also makes the El Niņo phenomenon gravely sensitive to climate state changes of either natural or anthropogenic causes.
