Science beyond the textbook

Many students find their interest in oceanic or weather science from sources outside the science textbook or classroom. I will demonstrate and discuss a variety of possibilities from other subject areas and sources. I will use language arts activities involving vocabulary word meanings and reading sources as "Seashore Counting Book", "Abbie Burgess, Lighthouse Heroine", "The Log of the Skipper's Wife", and "The Perfect Storm". Science references can also be found in poetry, music, and art, from student work to the masters. A vast array of questions can be raised from any subject area. It can be the spark that ignites the interest in our sciences.

I will present as the "Ol' Downeaster" in full sou'wester fishing outfit that once was used by a Maine dragger fisherman. On hand will also be items as a toy lobster, random fishing things, and coastal postcards to initiate discussions. Students and adults can find interest in our science fields from many sources. I want to encourage others to find and enjoy the fascination and love of the weather and sea that I have.
