W10.2 Climate and global change: a toolkit for teaching about our ever-changing world (Centre Greene Building 1, Room 3131)

Thursday, 6 July 2006: 1:45 PM
Lisa Gardiner, UCAR, Boulder, Colorado; and S. Henderson, R. Johnson, and R. Russell

During this workshop we will explore the current scientific understanding of global climate change while engaging participants in a series of activities appropriate for middle and high school classrooms. Our suite of hands-on activities sparks curiosity about the Earth system, develops inquiry skills, and exposes students to scientific data.

Specifically, participants will become familiar with the methods scientists use to explore past climates and will explore classroom activities that involve students in data analysis and development of conclusions about changes in Earth's climate. We will explore recent global change through activities about greenhouse gasses, modeling the Earth system, and the possible impacts of warming. And we will share classroom activities that empower students to make choices that positively impact the planet.

Participants will receive a toolkit of standards-based, hands-on activities to incorporate the Earth's climate system into classrooms. Information about using complimentary educational resources available from the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, including the Windows to the Universe (http://www.windows.ucar.edu/) and LEARN: Cycles of the Earth and Atmosphere (www.ucar.edu/learn) educational websites will be provided.
