Facts and History of NWCG’s Geospatial Task Group

During the summer of 1999, geospatial technologies became prevalent in wildland fire management. A group of interagency wildland fire geospatial specialist proposed to the Information Resource Management Working Team (IRMWT) under the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) that there should be a geospatial working team. The IRMWT created the Geospatial Task Group (GTG) in October 1999. The group provides a coordinated interagency point of contact for the NWCG IRMWT, and provides the NWCG IRMWT and all other NWCG working teams with quality information and advice concerning the use of geospatial data, applications, and processes in support of interagency wildland fire management. The presentation will provide a brief overview of the work that this group has accomplished since the group’s inception continuing on to what the GTG is currently working on. Some the project include the Investigation of Geospatial Support of Incident Management, fire area data standards, and a geospatial technology inventory. Following the PowerPoint presentation, an open discussion will be held with audience members. .
