Modeling post-frontal combustion in the FARSITE fire area simulator

Mark A. Finney, USDA Forest Service, Missoula, MT; and R. C. Seli and P. L. Andrews

Modeling capabilities of the FARSITE fire area simulator have been expanded to include post-frontal combustion and smoke production. FARSITE previously simulated only fire growth, with the focus on the fire perimeter. The BURNUP model was adapted to account for smoldering and flaming combustion. The use of emission factors allows calculation of smoke production. FARSITE accounts for both temporal and spatial variation in conditions. Smoke production for the entire fire is produced as a time series. A description of the heavy dead fuel and its moisture content is required as input. Results of the post-frontal combustion modeling are displayed as an animation.
