The Fire Research And Management Exchange System (FRAMES) and National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII): working together to build a foundation in support of wildland fire information and technology transfer

Jennifer Gaines, USGS, Denver, CO; and G. Gollberg

The National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) program has demonstrated leadership in biological information management. The NBII links diverse, high-quality biological databases, information products, and analytical tools maintained by NBII partners and collaborators in government agencies, academic institutions, non-government organizations, and private industry. NBII Partners and collaborators also work on new standards, tools, and technologies that make it easier to find, integrate, and apply biological resources information. The Fire Research And Management Exchange System (FRAMES) project is similarly being created to be the gateway website for ongoing information and technology transfer between the wildland fire management and research communities, and their publics. The current focus of the FRAMES project is to bring together the variety of tools that are critical to wildland fire and fuels management. FRAMES will provide a “one-stop” source of objective information for tool users so they can compare, evaluate and obtain tools, and will also give tool providers a marketplace where they can distribute their tools and obtain feedback about them. FRAMES and NBII are working together to demonstrate the value of connecting tools, information, and people for the wildland fire community.
