Storm Surge on Lake Butte Des Morts during the 11 June 2001 bow echo event
Timothy P. Marshall, Haag Engineering Co., Dallas, TX; and E. S. Brusky and J. K. Last
On 11 June 2001, a derecho moved southeast through central Wisconsin producing a large swath of straight-line winds. The storm passed over several shallow lakes including Lake Butte Des Morts near Oshkosh, WI. This lake was oriented northwest-southeast in alignment with the crest of the bow echo. Strong winds lasting more than thirty minutes created a storm surge on the southeast end of the lake as high as 1 meter. Many portable boat docks were destroyed. The authors will present a meteorological summary of this event along with the results of our damage survey. This will be the first time a storm surge has been documented on an inland lake with a derecho.
