Mesoscale precipitation structures during the Intermountain Precipitation Experiment
David M. Schultz, NOAA/NSSL, Norman, OK
The Intermountain Precipitation Experiment (IPEX) is a field and research program designed to improve the understanding, analysis, and prediction of precipitation in complex terrain. During the February 2000 field phase of IPEX, seven Intensive Observing Periods (IOPs) were observed. During this talk, the variety of different precipitation structures on the mesoscale will be described. Some of these structures (such as IOPs 4 and 5) are related to frontogenesis on the synoptic and mesoscale, whereas others (such as IOPs 2 and 3) are more related to topographic forcing.
