Wet snow icing upstream of mountains

Haraldur Ólafsson, University of Iceland, IS 150 Reykjavík, Iceland; and Á. J. Elíasson

A case of wet snow icing upstream of mountains is studied. A numerical simulation reveals that local effect of the mountains such as low level inversion upstream of the mountain, a corner wind and locally increased precipitation contribute to the severe icing. The simulation is successful in reproducing the local atmospheric conditions for the icing, suggesting that real-time local icing forecasts are within a reach.
