Hydrological validation of a numerical simulation of a high-precipitation event in the complex terrain of South-Iceland

Ólafur Rögnvaldsson, Universtity of Bergen, Reykjavik, Iceland; and G. G. Tómasson and H. Ólafsson

An event of high precipitation has been simulated with the MM5 model. The simulated precpipitation agrees quite well with the observed precipitation, but there are large gradients in the simulated precipitation and no observations are available in the mountains. The simulated precipitation is used as an input into a hydrological model and the resulting runoff is compared to observations. This comparison indicates that the precipiation simulation is successful and this method of estimating the orographic precipitation gradient in connection with hydrological modeling will be used in the future.
