In an effort to unify product generation across all UFS applications, new winter weather diagnostics are now available and include surface accumulated freezing rain, graupel/sleet, and snow. A new precipitation ice density option was added to the Noah-MP LSM using an approach from the operational RUC LSM that is based on low-level temperature and a variable snow density. The variable snow density uses information directly from the microphysics scheme. Preliminary results illustrating these new diagnostics will be shown for a winter weather case. Additionally, results will be shown from model runs using the original precipitation ice density formulation and the new variable precipitation ice density.
