Web based interface to the ECMWF archive

Baudouin Raoult, ECMWF, Reading, Berks., United Kingdom

Three years ago, the ECMWF meteorological archiving and retrieval system (MARS) was redesigned to cope with the growth of data produced by the various models running at ECMWF. At the time, an object-oriented database was chosen to store the archive metadata. As a result, it is now very easy for any user to navigate through this metadata and browse through more that one billion meteorological fields using a web browser. It is planned to pursue this idea and provide ways to select and retrieved data using standard web technology.
